New music vacation

Some new tunes added to the collection:

Hope of the States - The Lost Riots - Not bad, kind of a cross between Interpol, Radiohead, Joy Division, and the vocal sound of Treble Charger, but not as good as any of them. I like the music, even if most of the tracks sound alike, but the vocals, which consist mainly of whiny half- and whole-note syllables, just drag along.

Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures - Loving this disc, as expected. Nothing to complain about here.

Metric - Old World Underground, Where Are You Now? - Cool and funky, maybe a little too Veruca Salt-esque, but without the broadcast radio appeal (a good thing). Singer Emily Haines' vocals can be sharp and sweet within the same sentence, dynamic, and her vintage keyboards are very hip and retro. I'm not super hot on the lyrics, though; for some reason Courtney Love comes to mind? Not sure why.

The Polyphonic Spree - Together We're Heavy - This was a miss. Technically it's rich, layered and textured, very good, but the overall sound is way too 'Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat' for my taste. But I can see it being very uplifting and/or inspiring to the right kind of audience, just not me.

The Velvet Underground - The Best Of - So far so good. My first TVU disc, and I hear I need to get "TVU and Nico". A few standouts so far after only a couple of plays through the disc are "Heroin", "White Light/White Heat", "Stephanie Says" and "Sweet Jane".

Wilco - A Ghost Is Born - Love it. Can't get enough of "Spiders (Kidsmoke)". If you don't already own it, you really need to go out and buy this record.

Vacation in Tobermory was splendid. A week's worth of perfect weather, with swimming, canoeing, hiking, campfires, eating, drinking, and general relaxation does a body good. Very refreshing. Special thanks to Ken, Allison, Laine and Paige for hosting us at the cottage! Pics to come soon, promise.

Summer's half over :( Get out there and enjoy the rest of it!

  • nyerd: pretty weak review for metric :-( but at least you say she has a great voice. i love the CD. Emily kicks ass, and there aren't that many female artists out there that do right now...and they are canadian! their website kind of sucks though. was emily featured on a broken social scene album? i read something that made me think she was.
can't wait to see pics on-line!
