The history of the personal computer in TV commercials
» 5 Mar 2007, 2:03am - 0 comments1976 by RJD2 and leftchannel
» 5 Dec 2006, 12:48pm - 0 commentsGreat parallax animation made from photographs taken in Cuba to "capture the flair of the Latin influence in the song '1976' by RJD2"
Tacos-for-life for a PlayStation 3
» 21 Nov 2006, 11:14pm - 0 commentsOkay, last one... I couldn't resist posting this little pepita of humour! "...the Taco Bell fastfood chain is offering a lifetime of tacos in exchange for a PlayStation 3."
Playstation 3 Rush: Police Use Force, Witnesses Say
» 17 Nov 2006, 3:38pm - 2 commentsWhat is wrong with the world when police have to use batons to control a crowd of overzealous PS3 buyers?
Attempted PS3 smash-n-grab; selling lineup spots
» 17 Nov 2006, 3:32pm - 0 commentsThe madness continues... "everyone at the Alpharetta Best Buy has come together, vowing to make sure nothing else disturbs their night. Many of them are now armed with bats". And from the same article, "One guy had just sold his spot (in line) for $1000 cash".
Sony Playstation 3 sells for over $15K on eBay
» 17 Nov 2006, 2:59pm - 0 commentsThe opening-day buying craze for game consoles just boggles my mind.

Funny commercial
» 22 Jun 2006, 11:14am - 0 commentsDisgraced Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson does a commercial for Cheetah Power Surge energy drink... too funny.
Humans visible from space
» 13 Jun 2006, 4:34pm - 1 commentLooks like Google has been hard at work adding new high-resolution imagery to their Maps and Earth applications. Along with new high-res images in Algonquin Park and The French River (Google Earth only so far), this view of Chicago near Water Tower Place seems to have visible people crossing the street at the crosswalk, and this view of the Eiffel Tower easily shows people standing about and on the tower... just imagine what the U.S. government can see.
Iceberg Finder
» 29 May 2006, 9:09pm - 0 commentsMaps/tracks the location of icebergs around Newfoundland and Labrador detected by satellite and tourism operators. This will be valuable for our trip to Newfoundland in July!
Kristin's photos from Pakistan
» 29 May 2006, 8:39pm - 0 commentsKristin went to Pakistan in early February to do earthquake relief with the CRF and took a lot of great photos. Please check them out if you get a chance.
Windows Media Photo
» 29 May 2006, 11:42am - 0 commentsJust what we need, another image format... it does offer a few interesting features (especially floating point values for HDR), but whether they're worth the hassle is yet to be seen. Surprisingly, Microsoft hasn't incorporated any kind of DRM into the format.
Whitney Music Box
» 16 May 2006, 12:34pm - 0 commentsA musical realization of the motion graphics of John Whitney as described in his book "Digital Harmony"
Google Trends
» 11 May 2006, 2:03pm - 0 commentsDisplays data and graphs of search term popularity. You can even compare terms against one another, as in this example pitting the Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Detroit Red Wings.
1 2 3 4 5... a blast from the past!

Michael Reichmann previews Adobe Lightroom
» 9 Jan 2006, 11:04am - 0 commentsSounds like Adobe Lightroom will be a strong competitor to Apple Aperture, and it will run on the PC. I'm excited to try the public beta when it becomes available for Windows. I still love Capture One, but Lightroom seems like it may have enough to convert me.
New Adobe app to take on Apple's Aperture
» 7 Jan 2006, 11:36am - 0 commentsLooks like Adobe doesn't plan to sit idly by while Apple steals the market for RAW image management and workflow. This is exciting for me, since there's no reason to believe the new product won't run on Windows.
Big announcement from Carl Zeiss coming Wednesday
» 20 Dec 2005, 2:17am - 0 commentsThey say "Millions of SLR photographers will discover a new dimension..." I wonder if it could possibly be a lineup of Zeiss lenses made for Canon and/or Nikon bodies? That would be a dream come true. Coincidentally, I just sent them an email on Dec. 4th making that very same request! Maybe they decided to listen to my wise words? :) Official Zeiss teaser.

» 2 Dec 2005, 2:09pm - 0 commentsThe previous link reminded me of this site. People find stuff. They post it.
I Found Some Of Your Life
» 2 Dec 2005, 2:03pm - 0 commentsThis story/site is old (an archive, actually), but just came to my attention. Someone found a memory card in a taxi and, not knowing who owned it, created a photoblog of the pictures on the card, complete with fabricated stories about the people and scenes! This reminded me... in April, I found a Fuji xD memory card in a parking lot in Algonquin Park. I don't know what's on it, since I don't have a card reader for that format. Maybe I'll get one and do the same thing!
Google Analytics
» 23 Nov 2005, 11:44am - 0 commentsFree, professional website statistics for the masses. Based on Urchin, which Google seems to have recently acquired. Think about the implications of this for a minute: if Google knows who, when, how and why people are visiting the world's websites, they can, theoretically, integrate this "knowledge" into their search results (and other products), giving them an extraordinary edge over the competition! Is this a good idea? I leave that decision to you :)
Amazon Mechanical Turk
» 23 Nov 2005, 11:34am - 0 comments"Complete simple tasks that people do better than computers. And, get paid for it." This makes me wonder if there are any labour laws that come into play? Amazon is essentially outsourcing work across the globe, as they don't care which country the "worker" is in.
Plenoptic Camera: Focusing after the shot
» 23 Nov 2005, 11:29am - 0 commentsAmazing technology that lets you change the plane of focus in software, after taking the shot! Also noteworthy is that you can shoot with the lens at its widest aperture for the fastest shutter speed and lowest ISO setting (for best S/N ratio), then in postproduction, "compute" an image with infinite depth of field! Lens aperture essentially serves only to slow down shutter speed when the photographer deems necessary.
Apple Aperture
» 25 Oct 2005, 10:45am - 2 commentsLooks like Apple wants a piece of the Capture One pie! A really robust looking package with a beautiful interface; it's sure to win over more than a few Capture One/Adobe Camera Raw users. I wonder if a Windows version is in the works?
Canon 5D Field Report
» 26 Sep 2005, 12:05pm - 0 commentsMichael Reichmann from the Luminous Landscape has written a report on a pre-production Canon EOS 5D.

Contax Zeiss Lens Overview
» 26 Sep 2005, 12:01pm - 0 commentsA good source of info on the Carl Zeiss lenses that I'll be using on my new Canon EOS 5D. Manual focus (and aperture on the 5D), but amazing glass and the famous T* coating for high sharpness and contrast only equalled by the much more expensive Leica lenses.
Canon 5D spec sheet
» 17 Aug 2005, 4:53pm - 0 commentsNobody in the forums seems to know if this is the real deal or an elaborate hoax, but many are saying we'll know by the end of August, with a potential release in October. I'm pretty excited about it, though, as this would be a perfect upgrade for me if it turns out to be true.
Bell plans cell tracking for families
» 10 Aug 2005, 11:33am - 0 commentsIt's like LoJack for kids! Pretty soon we won't even need parenting skills at all. "It can also be set up to automatically check the phone's location and provide a log to parents." Why not just plant a GPS receiver under the skin at birth?
Broken Social Scene to release self-titled album October 4th
» 10 Aug 2005, 11:27am - 0 comments"BSS member Brendan Canning promises that the next few months will more than make up for the three-year break between records - he expects BSS to release another in the spring."

'Bride' Stripped Bare
» 4 Aug 2005, 10:41am - 0 commentsArticle from Editor's Guild Magazine: "Jonathan Lucas unveils his editing secrets on Tim Burton's 'Corpse Bride', the first stop-motion animation feature." They use a number of Canon EOS-1D Mark II digital SLRs to create stop-motion animation that's indistinguishable from a computer-animated film.
Microsoft's Earth deletes Apple HQ
» 25 Jul 2005, 1:55pm - 0 commentsOverly-dramatic and a poorly-disguised bias that drives me berzerk. Yet another chapter written by an uninformed, drama queen tech-wannabe in the neverending tale of Apple vs. Microsoft. Why do I read this trash?
Google Moon
» 20 Jul 2005, 11:36am - 0 commentsGoogle Maps interface to the lunar landing sites of the Apollo missions. Zoom all the way in for a little surprise. Makes me wonder when universe.google.com will arrive?!
Bloggers learn the price of telling too much
» 19 Jul 2005, 11:45am - 0 commentsMildly annoying but somewhat relevant (I need to stop reading CNN.com) piece about bloggers who tell all online. "Experts say such incidents belong to a growing trend in which frank outpourings online are causing personal and public dramas" - oh no! People are talking about things like sexuality and alcohol... in public! Keep your eyes peeled for Conservative legislature to ban blogs... 'Dubya' must be having nightmares.
How much does Google know about you?
» 19 Jul 2005, 11:30am - 0 commentsDeal Done! NHL, NHLPA reach tentative deal
» 13 Jul 2005, 1:32pm - 0 comments"...if approved by the NHL board of governors next Thursday and the rank and file membership of the NHLPA next Tuesday - will officially end the stalemate on July 21."
Google Earth beta
» 5 Jul 2005, 5:26pm - 0 commentsGoogle launches a free, public beta of Keyhole, whom they acquired only four months ago. Includes many of the features of the commercial Keyhole software, including flying, 3D terrain and buildings, search, and bookmarks. I love how it will actually "fly" your requested driving directions, like a virtual road trip!
50 Coolest Websites of 2005: Time.com
» 29 Jun 2005, 4:13pm - 0 commentsDanica upset and confused by Ecclestone's comments
» 23 Jun 2005, 10:42am - 0 comments"Among the comments Ecclestone made in the interview and to the Roscoe, Ill., native was that 'Women should be all dressed in white like all other domestic appliances.'" - She's taking it very well, considering the assinine comments he's made. No wonder people think auto racing is for rednecks.

Top 100 movie quotes of all time: AFI
» 22 Jun 2005, 10:53am - 0 commentsWhat, "I feel the need..." from Top Gun only comes in at #94, but "I see dead people" from The Sixth Sense makes #44? Not to mention that I think about half the script of Casablanca is in there. At least "I love the smell of napalm in the morning" made it from Apocolypse Now. The "damned dirty apes".

» 6 May 2005, 10:26am - 0 commentsI can't believe anyone ever thought it was a good idea to hunt real game with a mouse click. Setting up rifle turrets in the woods with cameras on them... only in the USA would you ever see such a ridiculous thing.
